AIDS stands for Acquired Immunodeficiency Syndrome and means that specific combinations of symptoms will reflect an effected destruction of the human immune system caused by the Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV).

Until today AIDS has killed more than 25 million people on the planet – it belongs to the deadliest diseases in mankind history. Not only because of its death-toll more over because of the human destiny not having found an antitoxin or vaccination for the HI virus.
AIDS is a pandemic disease which means for its infection there are no borders in countries or on continents. Like other pandemics in the present and past it makes AIDS a topic well aware and of interest for everybody on earth. Nowadays the ways of infections and risks of being infected are quite clear, nevertheless more than 40 million people on earth are infected with HIV. Which means precaution is one of the most important tasks to be done – most effectively is information, education and prevention. Because of HIV’s most occurring transmission during sexual contact, using condoms is one of the most important ways of preventing AIDS.
AIDS epidemic has been officially reported since June 5th 1981 when the U.S. Center for Disease Control and Prevention reported significant symptoms of pneumocystis pneumonia among gay men (these symptoms formerly called GRID) and by August 1982 the name AIDS was released. In May 1986 the identification of the virus has been accomplished – from separated indications of LAV in 1983 and HTLV-III in 1984 – the International Committee on Taxonomy of Viruses ruled the name HIV to be used.
Nowadays latest scientific researches suggest the origin of AIDS dating back to much earlier times. Although the oldest blood samples of HIV being collected dated back to 1959 by a person from Belgian Congo, latest scientific results calculate the jump from chimpanzees to human might occurred during the late 19th and early 20th century.
